Definition of Electrostatic and Some important Application of Electrostatic - Param Himalaya
Questions: Definition of Electrostatics / static Electricity?
Answer : The branch of physics which deal with the study of electric force , electric field , electric potential and electric energy due to charges at rest is known as Electrostatics. It is also known as static Electricity.
Note : When a glass rod is rubbed with silk and separated, then glass rob becomes positively charged and silk becomes negatively charged . It is because during rubbing , some electrons are transferred from glass to silk.
Since glass rod and silk are separated by an insulating medium , they retain the charges . In other words , the charges on them are static or stationary. Electrostatic means electricity at rest.
Important Applications of Electrostatics:
1. A photocopier is mainly based on principles of Electrostatics.
2. Electric capacitors or condenser work on the principle of Electrostatics.
3. High electric potential sources, van de graaff generator ( electrostatic generator ) works on the principle of Electrostatics.
4. Energy losses can be reduced with the help of power factor correctors which on the principle of Electrostatics.
5. Pollution can be controlled by the methods of Electrostatics , for example, electrostatic precipitators of fly ash.
6. Spray painting and powder coatings are done with the help of principle of Electrostatics.
7. Sensitive instrument are protected from external electric field with the help of electrostatic shielding.
8. Natural Phenomenon like lightning and thunders can be explained by using knowledge of electrostatics.
9. Atomic structure can be explained by using the principles of Electrostatics.
